Formal and/but: 而
A 而 B / …,而 + Contrasting Clause
而 (ér) is written Chinese's favorite connector. Between adjectives it means a graceful "and": 这里的冬天冷而干燥 "winters here are cold and dry." Between clauses it pivots to "whereas": 他喜欢安静,而我喜欢热闹 "he likes quiet, whereas I like a lively scene."
Its sharpest form is 而不是 "rather than": 学习是为了自己,而不是为了父母 "studying is for yourself, not for your parents." One rule: 而 joins predicates and clauses — for two nouns, use 和.
