Separable verbs: 见面, 睡觉, 唱歌

Verb + (了/个/Duration) + Object-half  ·  Traditional: Verb + (了/個/Duration) + Object-half

Many two-character "verbs" are secretly verb + object: 见面 is "see + face", 睡觉 is "sleep + a sleep", 唱歌 is "sing + song". That means grammar bits like 了, 个, and durations go INSIDE them, between the two halves: 见个面 "meet up", 睡了一个小时的觉 "slept for an hour".

The practical rule: never put a duration or a count after the whole word. "We met once" is 我们见了一次面, not 我们见面了一次 (a plain sentence-final 了 is fine: 我们见面了). And these verbs can't take another object — "meet him" is 跟他见面, not 见面他.

Examples

我们明天吧。
我們明天吧。
wǒ men míng tiān jiàn gè miàn ba
Let's meet up tomorrow.
了一个小时的
了一個小時的
tā shuì le yī ge xiǎo shí de jiào
He slept for an hour.
昨天我跟朋友
昨天我跟朋友
zuó tiān wǒ gēn péng you jiàn le miàn
I met up with a friend yesterday.

Common mistakes

✗ 他睡觉了一个小时。
✓ 他睡了一个小时的觉。
睡觉 splits — the duration goes between 睡 and 觉.
✗ 我明天见面他。
✓ 我明天跟他见面。
见面 already contains its object, so the person goes in front with 跟.
