Originally: 本来 vs 原来

本来 (běnlái) is "originally" — how things were or were planned before they changed: 我本来想去，后来没时间了 "I originally wanted to go, but then I had no time". It sets up a turn with 后来, 现在, or 但是.
原来 (yuánlái) has two jobs: it can mean plain "formerly" (我原来住在北京 "I used to live in Beijing"), but its signature use is the discovery "so THAT's how it was all along": 原来是你！"oh, it was you!" The safe test: a plan that changed and shouldn't have → 本来; a fact you just found out → 原来.
Examples
我本来想去，后来没时间了。
我本來想去，後來沒時間了。
wǒ běn lái xiǎng qù hòu lái méi shí jiān le
I originally wanted to go, but then I didn't have time.
他本来不会做饭，现在做得很好。
他本來不會做飯，現在做得很好。
tā běn lái bù huì zuò fàn xiàn zài zuò de hěn hǎo
He originally couldn't cook — now he cooks really well.
原来是你！我还以为是谁呢。
原來是你！我還以為是誰呢。
yuán lái shì nǐ wǒ hái yǐ wéi shì shéi ne
So it was you! I was wondering who it could be.
我说他怎么没来，原来他生病了。
我說他怎麼沒來，原來他生病了。
wǒ shuō tā zěn me méi lái yuán lái tā shēng bìng le
No wonder he didn't come — turns out he's sick.
Common mistakes
✗ 原来我想去，后来没时间了。
✓ 我本来想去，后来没时间了。
A changed plan takes 本来 — 原来 announces a discovery you just made.
