Not only … but also: 不但…而且…

Subj. + 不但 A,而且 (也/还) B  ·  Traditional: Subj. + 不但 A,而且 (也/還) B

不但…而且… stacks two points in the same direction: 她不但会说中文,而且说得很好 "she not only speaks Chinese, she speaks it well". Like 因为…所以…, Chinese happily uses both halves of the pair.

Two placement rules. When both halves are about the same person, the subject comes BEFORE 不但 (她不但…, not 不但她…). And the second half usually adds 也 or 还 after 而且: 他不但喜欢唱歌,而且还喜欢跳舞.

Examples

不但会说中文,而且说得很好。
不但會說中文,而且說得很好。
tā bù dàn huì shuō zhōng wén ér qiě shuō de hěn hǎo
She not only speaks Chinese — she speaks it very well.
这个菜不但好吃,而且很便宜。
這個菜不但好吃,而且很便宜。
zhè ge cài bù dàn hǎo chī ér qiě hěn pián yi
This dish is not only tasty but also cheap.
不但喜欢唱歌,而且喜欢跳舞。
不但喜歡唱歌,而且喜歡跳舞。
tā bù dàn xǐ huan chàng gē ér qiě hái xǐ huan tiào wǔ
He not only likes singing, he also likes dancing.

Common mistakes

✗ 不但她会说中文,而且说得很好。
✓ 她不但会说中文,而且说得很好。
With one shared subject, the subject goes before 不但.
