Doing two things at once: 一边…一边…
一边 + Verb A,一边 + Verb B · Traditional: 一邊 + Verb A,一邊 + Verb B
一边…一边… puts two actions on at the same time: 他一边吃饭,一边看电视 "he eats while watching TV". Each 一边 sits directly in front of its own verb.
Both actions must be ongoing activities you can actually do simultaneously — it's for "walking and chatting", not for states like 是 or 有. Don't connect the verbs with 和; the two 一边s ARE the connector.
Examples
他一边吃饭,一边看电视。
他一邊吃飯,一邊看電視。
tā yī biān chī fàn yī biān kàn diàn shì
He watches TV while eating.
我们一边走,一边聊天。
我們一邊走,一邊聊天。
wǒ men yī biān zǒu yī biān liáo tiān
We chatted as we walked.
不要一边开车,一边打电话。
不要一邊開車,一邊打電話。
bù yào yī biān kāi chē yī biān dǎ diàn huà
Don't talk on the phone while driving.
她一边听音乐,一边做作业。
她一邊聽音樂,一邊做作業。
tā yī biān tīng yīn yuè yī biān zuò zuò yè
She does her homework while listening to music.
Common mistakes
✗ 他一边吃饭和看电视。
✓ 他一边吃饭,一边看电视。
Use 一边 before EACH verb — 和 can't join two actions here.
