Almost with 差点儿
差点儿 + Verb · Traditional: 差點兒 + Verb
差点儿 (chàdiǎnr) means something ALMOST happened — but didn't: 我今天早上差点儿迟到 "I was almost late this morning" (I made it). It's usually about things you're glad didn't happen.
A famous quirk: when the verb is something bad, adding 没 changes nothing — 我差点儿摔倒 and 我差点儿没摔倒 both mean "I almost fell (but didn't)". But when the verb is something good, they differ: 我差点儿没赶上火车 means "I almost missed the train — but caught it", while 我差点儿赶上火车 means I missed it.

wǒ jīn tiān zǎo shang chà diǎn er chí dào
I was almost late this morning.
他差点儿把这件事忘了。
他差點兒把這件事忘了。
tā chà diǎn er bǎ zhè jiàn shì wàng le
He almost forgot about this.
我差点儿没赶上火车。
我差點兒沒趕上火車。
wǒ chà diǎn er méi gǎn shàng huǒ chē
I almost missed the train.
路上很滑，我差点儿摔倒了。
路上很滑，我差點兒摔倒了。
lù shang hěn huá wǒ chà diǎn er shuāi dǎo le
The road was slippery — I almost fell.
Common mistakes
✗ 我差点儿迟到了半个小时。
✓ 我迟到了半个小时。
差点儿 means it did NOT happen — if you really were late, drop it.
