The smallest step in the new syllabus, and the one where short stories start to make sense.

This deck has all 199 words the 2026 HSK 3.0 syllabus (published November 2025) introduces at HSK 2; with the levels below it you reach 499 words. 194 cards have an example sentence, 137 of them from a story you can read on this site.

How to use this deck

  1. Look at the front and say the answer out loud before you flip.
  2. Flip, check, and mark Knew it or Didn’t know. Be strict: a slow or half-right answer is a miss.
  3. At the end of the set, review only the cards you missed until none are left.
  4. Come back tomorrow and do the set again before starting a new one. Short daily sessions beat long ones.

Which pronunciation does the audio use?

The audio uses your device’s built-in Chinese voice. Pick Mainland (zh-CN) or Taiwan (zh-TW); the Taiwan voice reads the traditional characters. Quality depends on the voices your device has installed.

Why does the zhuyin sometimes differ from the pinyin?

Zhuyin is shown with Taiwan’s standard pronunciation, which differs for some words, for example 垃圾 lājī (Mainland) and ㄌㄜˋ ㄙㄜˋ lèsè (Taiwan).

Try reading your first story

The fastest way to make characters stick is to meet them in a story you can actually finish. Literate Chinese has 1,000+ graded stories matched to the words you know — in Mainland or Taiwan Mandarin, Simplified or Traditional. Free on iOS and Android.
